Course Description
This two-hour continuing education program trains mental health professionals in the application of evidence-based suicide risk assessment and intervention strategies, with a focused lens on telehealth delivery and the policy factors that influence access and quality of care for rural and underserved populations. Participants will identify key suicide risk and protective factors across diverse populations and apply structured, evidence-informed assessment frameworks, including the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), PHQ-9, and Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), to guide clinical decision-making.
Participants will also develop collaborative safety plans that integrate coping strategies, crisis response tools, means-safety considerations, and linkage to community resources. The program addresses culturally responsive practice and the ethical and legal dimensions of suicide prevention in telehealth settings, including documentation standards, HIPAA-related considerations, and duty-to-warn/protect obligations. Telehealth-specific clinical challenges—such as limited nonverbal data, technology disruptions, and coordination of emergency response—are examined alongside practical strategies to maintain clinical effectiveness and continuity of care.
By integrating telehealth-adapted clinical best practices with a trauma-informed perspective and policy-aware decision-making, the course equips clinicians to strengthen the quality, accessibility, and ethical integrity of suicide prevention services across settings. This course is designed for social workers and other mental health professionals providing clinical services in diverse practice environments.
